BUILDING IMMUNITY
Colds, flu, and other contagious respiratory infections run rampant this time of year. Many people are sneezing, coughing and feeling rundown. Yet numerous individuals manage to avoid the negative effects of the season, even though we’re all exposed to the germs of those who are sick. A strong immune system is the key. The immune system involves your skin, saliva, internal organs, as well as blood and lymph systems. When the body is under stress, viruses, bacteria, and other invaders find a weakened host and easily gain the upper hand.
Besides frequent colds, common signs of an imbalanced immune system are chronic allergies, asthma, hay fever, as well as multiple sclerosis, lupus, Alzheimer’s, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), AIDS and cancer. The main culprit for reduced immunity is our food supply. Cattle and chickens are fed with huge amounts of antibiotics, growth hormones, and artificial feed. We are exposed to far more food additives and dyes, new synthetic foods with hydrogenated fats and artificial sweeteners. These are substances the body doesn’t recognize as nourishment, but rather as toxins that have to be eliminated. The immune system is busy fighting these foreign substances, and doesn’t have the reserves for the allergens, germs and viruses.
The other major culprit is sugar, one of the most harmful foods for the immune system. The low fat food craze has driven people to more sugar than ever before. Check out a label of a low or fat free food- they add more sugars to improve the flavor.
Strive to pay attention to the food you are eating. Look for organic, free-range meats and dairy. Avoid packaged foods that are full of hydrogenated oils and reduce the amount of sugar in your daily diet. Eat more vegetables, fruit, and whole grains. Get regular exercise, drink plenty of water, and get adequate rest.
Don’t know how to incorporate these suggestions into your hectic lifestyle? A holistic health counselor can help you make these changes easily and intelligently. Give us a call! 856-985-9789
Recipe of the Month
Ginger Carrot Miso Soup
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 clove garlic
3-4 shallots peeled and minced
1” piece chopped ginger
sea salt
3-4 cups coarsely chopped carrots
4-5 cups pure water
2 tablespoons white miso
fresh dill sprigs for garnish(optional)
Heat olive oil in a soup pot over medium heat. Add garlic and shallots with a pinch of sea salt and sauté until soft, about 10 minutes.
Add carrots and ginger and cook, stirring until coated with oil.
Add 4 cups of water and bring to a boil over high heat. (reserve remaining cup of water until end if soup is too thick.) Cover and reduce heat to low, simmer about 20 minutes until carrots are tender. The smaller the carrot pieces the quicker they will cook.
Let soup cool slightly with the cover off. Puree in blender, food processor or hand held immersion blender until smooth. Remove ½ cup to a bowl and add miso. Stir until miso is dissolved.
Stir mixture back into soup and simmer gently about 3 more minutes. Do not boil miso or it will lose its nutritious quality. Add more water if needed.
Serve garnished with fresh dill sprigs, if desired.
