KIDS, OBESITY AND EXERCISE
Excerpted from Diamond Organics Newsletter 9/02
American kids are at high risk for becoming obese- as many as one in five children are 20% or more overweight. This percentage is more than double that of 1970. This problem only increases as they hit adolescence, when physical activity tends to decline. Overweight kids tend to become overweight adults with a host of health problems from diabetes to heart disease.
Contributing factors to childhood obesity include inactivity, high caloric intake, and metabolic programming (hereditary factors), as children of two overweight parents are more likely to be overweight. Families eat out more often these days, thus consuming higher-calorie foods in larger portions than in the past, and TV watching is increasing.
Children naturally gain weight and go through growth spurts, and this kind of weight fluctuation is not to be worried about. A child who is 30% or 40% overweight, however, needs help to regain a healthy lifestyle. The most successful weight loss programs for children involve parents- in fact, if there is not at least one parent involved in increasing physical activity, the child is unlikely to make any long-term progress.
Make healthy living a family affair, like limiting TV to a few shows a week, eating right, and being active with the whole family. If parents, teachers, and friends provide activity as an alternative to inactivity, kids (and parents) can try active options and turn them into healthy habits. Here're some simple things to do:
- Walk the dog
- Do household chores (vacuum, take out the garbage, wash the car, etc)
- Have active special occasions- go on a hike for a birthday, or to the skating rink
- Join sports programs at school
- Add exercise to weekend plans- fly a kite, go swimming
- Get at least one hour of moderate activity each day
- Have kids do strength training
- Buy toys that encourage activity- bats and balls instead of electronic games
Quick Snacks For Kids Of All Ages
- Stuff celery with hummus or nut butter
- Soy or rice yogurt topped with low fat granola and berries
- Unsweetened applesauce with raisins and cinnamon
- Organic fruit and melons
- Popcorn
- Smear a light coating of almond butter (or other nut butter such as peanut) on rice cakes or whole grain bread top with banana’s, pears or apples
- Stone ground corn chips with bean salsa
