START THE DAY RIGHT!
“If you habitually skip breakfast, stop this bad habit tomorrow. Eating in the morning will improve your memory and concentration all day. It also gives your body the energy it needs to get started and, along with other balanced meals throughout the day, will keep your blood sugar stable, which will keep you energized.”
- From Natural Health Magazine – September 2001
Simply put, if you want more energy (and who doesn’t) don’t grab the traditional bagel and coffee, or sugary Danish. This is the first fuel you are giving your body and you are going to want a stable source of energy. Coffee and simple carbohydrates (think white flour and baked goods) will only give you a quick burst, and inevitably a quick drop in energy. Go for complex carbohydrates such as oatmeal, and other whole grains. You may also need some protein such as eggs, yogurt, or soymilk.
Here are some ideas:
• Oatmeal with soymilk (add dried fruits and nuts)
• Poached egg on whole grain toast
• To-Go Shake – soymilk and fresh/frozen fruit
• Life Stream brand frozen waffles with almond butter www.naturespath.com
• Kashi dried cereals are very filling and lightly sweetened. www.kashi.com
• Dinner or Lunch leftovers, with lots of veggies
• Soup, yes lots of people prefer “non breakfast” foods for breakfast.
If you really aren’t hungry in the morning, you might have eaten dinner too late. Opt for a freshly squeezed juice or piece of whole fruit. It’s like an inner bath for your body! You take a shower every morning, why not on the inside too.
Here’s an on-the-go treat that’s great for breakfast when you have absolutely no time.
PEANUT BUTTER FAJITA
- Smear a light coating of almond butter (or other nut butter such as peanut) on a whole wheat tortilla
- Top with sliced banana and apples
- Roll and go
Variation: replace fruit with roasted sweet veggies such as carrots, beets, yams, squashes and cooked fruit. Make a large batch to last you several meals. Trust me, this is good!
Enjoy!
