BALANCING THE pH OF YOUR BLOOD
contributed by Gary Rosard, CHHC
The average American diet includes a lot of animal protein, refined grains, sugar, refined oils, and alcohol, and not really enough in the way of fruit and vegetables. One of the problems with this ratio is the effect on the acid/ alkaline balance of the blood. The first group, when digested and burned, leaves a residue of carbonic, phosphoric or sulfuric acids, while the second group leaves behind minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron. When the blood becomes too acidic, it will find the minerals stored in the body in order to help regulate the pH balance. And these minerals are mostly stored in your bones and teeth.
Many people, especially as they age, are worried about getting enough calcium in their diet to protect bone health. But sometimes the problem isn't so much how much calcium they are taking in, but rather how much is being leached out.
Fruit and vegetables seem to be the answer to so many questions about eating a healthy diet. Is it a surprise that they also help to protect your bones?
Sea vegetables (or seaweed) are one of the best sources of minerals. This is pretty foreign to most western cultures, and you may only have ever had them as the wrapping of sushi rolls, or in a bowl of miso soup. But they are worth getting to know, and can be very easy to use. You buy them dried and packaged, usually from a health food store or Asian market. They have names such as nori, kombu, hijiki, and arame. Below is a very simple recipe that will help with the alkaline balance, as well as satisfying a sweet tooth. It includes arame, which has a milder flavor than some others. It looks like dark, fine, brittle threads. A small amount goes a long way, as it will expand when soaked.
If you want to learn more about acid conditions you may be experiencing and how to use food to balance the problem, HLW is here to help. Call 856-985-9789 to schedule your free get acquainted session where you can ask questions you have concerning your health to a certified HLW health counselor. Best of all, it’s absolutely FREE!
SWEET POTATO WITH ARAME
(4 servings)
2 sweet potatoes or yams
1/4- 1/3 cup (dry) arame
Water
Extra virgin olive oil (optional)
- Soak arame in a bowl of warm water
- Slice the sweet potatoes thinly. Add about a cup of water to a skillet or wide saucepan, bring to a boil, and add the potatoes.
- Drain and discard the water from the arame, then add to the pan.
- Stir occasionally and watch the water level, add a little more as needed.
The sweet potatoes should get soft and start to fall apart in about 5 minutes. The goal is to have all the water absorbed when the potatoes are done. You can then add a drizzle of olive oil if desired, but it isn't necessary. No other seasonings are necessary either. The sweetness of the potatoes and the saltiness of the arame are a great combination. You may also add a little fresh black pepper to top it off.
