SPRING CLEANING FOR THE BODY AND MIND
By Gary Rosard, CHHC

The words "spring cleaning" usually bring to mind a cleaning out of
one's home, getting rid of "stuff", giving the home a good scrubbing,
opening up the windows to let in the fresh air. It can also be a
great time to rejuvenate our bodies as the warmer weather leads us to
more a more active lifestyle.

During the winter months, it is common to eat more meat and high fat
foods to help us keep warm. Consumption of sugar also tends to be
high. Coming off the holiday season, the addiction gets stronger, and
the effects of the dark cold weather often have one seek comfort in
sweets. Among other problems, this sort of diet has a tendency to
create sluggishness in the liver. The liver is responsible for
cleansing the blood and eliminating toxins from the body. When not
able to do its job fully, toxins accumulate and a breeding ground for
disease is the result.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the seasons are connected with the
body's organs as well as emotions, foods and other characteristics of
our internal and external environment. The liver is the organ that
corresponds to spring, so this is a particularly good time to pay
attention to strengthening this part of the body. Some of the foods
that have a healing effect on the liver are sour foods such as lemon,
grapefruit sauerkraut and olives. Carrots and carrot juice also help
to strengthen the liver. Eating plenty of leafy greens, such as
lettuces and collards, as well as broccoli is cleansing for the whole
body. Have more raw or lightly cooked foods as part of your diet. For
a simple but effective liver tonic, squeeze 1/4 lemon into a glass of
warm water (If you would like to experience a deep liver cleansing read about our “Annual Spring Liver Detox” in the article below). Drink this first thing in the morning. If you are experiencing some intestinal gas, you might find this to be an excellent remedy.

Spring is the time to start getting outside for some exercise and a
daily dose of Vitamin D, hard to get from food sources, and necessary
for absorption and utilization of calcium. Exposure to the sun for 15
minutes a day (without sunscreen) provides all the Vitamin D we need.
Try to get those 15 minutes before 11 am or after 4pm to avoid the
strongest sun.

One great way clean out winter's cobwebs is to reconnect to the
natural world. During spring, things are changing quickly. Try to
notice one thing about nature every day. This is even possible in the
most urban environment. You might notice the shape and texture of a
tree that you pass every day, the phase of the moon, cloud
configurations, or a new flower that bloomed in the park. Notice that
you feel uplifted when you make the effort to pay attention to your
natural surroundings.
Try this great recipe as part of your spring-cleaning diet.

HEARTY SPRING SALAD
(4 meal size servings)

Salad:

1 bunch of arugula 1 bunch romaine 2 avocados 2 dozen fresh green olives 3-4 green onions (scallions) or 1 large red onion 2 medium carrots 1-2 cups sugar snap peas 1 daikon radish or red radishes as desired 1 can organic beans (black-eyed peas, black beans, etc.) 1 tin of anchovies (optional)

Dressing:

Juice of 1 large lemon 1 generous tbsp. dijon mustard 1 generous tbsp. horseradish A few shakes of tamari or shoyu Extra virgin olive oil
Don't get too concerned about exact quantities, eliminate or add
ingredients according to your taste.
Make your own favorite lemon based vinaigrette recipe if you don't have all of the above ingredients. You could even eliminate the oil, as the avocado will provide a rich, creamy taste and texture.

  1. Rinse greens well and chop or tear into pieces as desired
  2. Peel avocado, slice into thin pieces
  3. Dice scallions, or slice red onion, thinly slice carrots on the bias, or grate, remove stems from sugar snaps, thinly slice daikon or red radishes.
  4. Drain beans, drain anchovies and chop into small pieces.
  5. Make dressing by combining all dressing recipe ingredients except oil, blend well. Slowly add oil while continuing to stir with a fork or wire wisk. Add just enough oil to make an emulsion (the dressing will become a creamy texture).
  6. Toss salad ingredients with dressing and serve.

HLW ANNUAL SPRING LIVER DETOX!

Spring is here!

I know it is hard to believe with all of the rain and cold temperatures we are still experiencing but if you watch the night sky carefully you will begin to notice the days are lighter longer. In the next few weeks the crocus will be peeking through the soil, a testament to the coming beauty of the flowers and new life of spring time

This is the perfect time to get your body ready for the new season. You can begin to transition by releasing the toxins that accumulate during winter from fattier food and less activity . Cleansing our body at this time will begin to dissolve the winter fat that naturally occurs in order to keep us warm but will no longer be needed in spring temperatures and summer bathing suits.

We are offering a spring internal liver-cleansing program at HLW beginning April 25th!
