HOW TO LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
By Rose Payne, CHHC

“How can I listen to my body?” is a question frequently asked at lectures and in counseling sessions. It may come as complete surprise to some that their body is actually capable of talking to them at all. I can assure you that this communication is ongoing yet because people get caught up in the busyness and stress of life they tend to ignore messages that may be clear warning signs of impending illness. For many people these cautionary signals are never heeded, and they end up in the hospital or worse. How can this be avoided?

Begin by taking a regular inventory anywhere from a few times a day to few times a week of how you are feeling both physically and emotionally. At first this may take concentration and patience. As with any exercise, repetition and consistency will build a stronger muscle. As your listening muscle grows it will take only a few moments to check in and hear what your body is trying to tell you.

At first, I suggest you do this in a quiet place when you have a few minutes you can spend alone. Pay careful attention to any tightening in the chest, tension or pain in the stomach or solar plexus (your “gut” feelings), any clenching or pain in the jaw, tremor in the fingers or legs (restless leg syndrome), and involuntary twitches in limbs, eyelids, or face. These are all signs of accumulating stress, danger signals that need to be dealt with while they are still minor.

Ask yourself what foods could you eat today to support strong health for your body/mind. Should you go home and take a bath or go to bed early? Would it be better to meet friends or go to yoga class? If you take the time to ask you will be amazed at how quickly and clearly the answers will come.

Another exercise you can do is to watch your breath. Observe it rising from the solar plexus up to your lungs. Feel the rib cage expand and the collarbones rise. Then watch the exhalation, feeling the relaxation and letting go of the breath and body. Take time to feel the sensations that come and go, and in a few minutes, you will have a clear connection to your emotional state.

If you’re feeling anxious or worried at all, ask yourself, “ what is the source of my discomfort or anxiety?” Is it something you can resolve, and if so, what course of action needs to be taken? For many people the source of discomfort and anxiety is vague and unclear. It’s been described as “background stress” and many experts suggest that ingesting caffeine and/or sugar may be at the core of such feelings.

It is important to understand that stress and anxiety affect every part of you. It is well known that stress has an effect on the body and mind, but on a more subtle level it affects who you are. The sage advice to “know thyself” is an important part of self-mastery. It helps us to tune into what is truly important and meaningful. Life is short, and we really don’t want to be “spinning our wheels” or wasting precious time on matters that do not enrich us.

Listening to your body is a key skill to cultivate in order to short cut problems that interfere with your own personal growth and development, as well as keeping your finger on the pulse of your mental and physical health.
