BOOK REVIEW

Depression-Free for Life: A Physician’s All-Natural, 5-Step Plan
Gabriel Cousens, MD
ISBN # 0-06-095965-7

After having met Dr. Gabriel Cousens last January, I was so impressed by his youthful appearance and his Arizona perpetual tan, that I bought his book: Depression-free for Life. The book contained an all-natural 5-step plan to help keep you from suffering from depression.

What I learned from reading it was that the 5-step plan was not easy and it involved consuming supplements (amino acids and certain vitamins). He didn’t discuss real foods by themselves as a solution to the depression problem. This was a surprise as was his recipe section. The recipes were vegan or raw food recipes. He had some nice salad dressing recipes that I would recommend and his soup recipes were for cold soups -- not surprising since he lives in Arizona. The recipes were not ones you could easily incorporate into the average person’s routine.

The main gems from the book are that sugar is bad for your metabolism and blood sugar levels and sugar contributes to depression and should be avoided. The second point is that taking amino acids are key to improving one’s mood. The last point was to exercise – do yoga or just move your body by walking. It helps stimulate a sluggish metabolism.

The book describes each amino acid in detail as well as several vitamins and supplements. While the book is helpful, it does come across as dry scientific reading. In the book, he reports that he has helped patients get off of cocaine and other drugs by recommending the “right combination” of supplements but the average person would need professional guidance to incorporate the right combinations of amino acids and vitamins into their diet to be successful.

I didn’t love this book, but I do find value in sections of it. I believe that people who suffer from mild or seasonal depression might get some ideas to help improve their nutrition by reading this book and the knowledge gained in combination with an alternative medicine health practitioner might just get them “depression-free”.

Dr. Cousens suggests avoiding sugar, attaining balanced supplementation and physical activity as the keys to creating a depression-free and happier existence. A few small changes in diet will have a huge and beneficial impact on all aspects of your well-being.

QUICK RECIPE

Roasted Portabella Mushrooms, Peppers, and Zucchini
Page 381 from The Kripalu Cookbook: Gourmet Vegetarian Recipes by Atma Joann Levitt, ISBN# 0-936399-65-1

Preparation & Cooking Time: 25 minutes
Marinating time: Minimum 30 minutes; Serves: 8 people

1 pound of fresh portabella mushrooms (washed, trimmed = approx. 3 medium mushrooms)
2 large red bell peppers, deveined, seeded, and cut into 1x3 inch strips
2 large zucchini, cut into 1x3 inch strips

Marinade:

¾ cup olive oil
2 cups water
1/8 cup balsamic vinegar
¾ tablespoon finely chopped garlic
1 teaspoon salt or to taste
1 teaspoon ground paprika
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper

Prepare all the vegetables and place in one or two large, shallow bowls. Set aside.
To make the marinade: In a large bowl, mix together all of the marinade ingredients. Pour the marinade over the reserved vegetables and marinade for at least 30 minutes and at most 2 hours.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Drain the vegetables and place on 1-2 large baking sheets. Roast in the oven for 10-15 minutes, turning once. For faster results, place under the broiler and broil for 3 minutes per side. On outdoor grill: 3-5 minutes per side. Serve immediately.

[HLW Note:] Great with Brown Rice Pasta topped with a mixture olive oil and umeboshi vinegar, chopped garlic and chopped fresh parsley, and freshly grated parmesan cheese. Or heat a corn, spelt or sprouted tortilla and make a veggie wrap with it.
