SUGAR IN DISGUISE
While giving a lecture the other day one of the participants was shocked to learn that white rice was metabolized in the body exactly like pure white refined sugar. She had changed her diet to include rice because media sources said eating carbohydrates was healthier and would also lead to weight loss. No one had educated her on the differences between eating simple and complex carbohydrates. Assuming all carbohydrates were equal, she incorporated this staple into her daily diet, only to discover she had not lost but actually gained weight.
All simple carbohydrates are sugar and the many different faces of this crafty sweetness can be deceiving. Did you know that pasta and cereal are sugar? The same is true for white food like potatoes, rice and bread. Milk, fruit drinks, alcohol, and even cigarettes can contain sugar. When these foods are ingested they are converted to and create high insulin levels in the body the same as if they were ice cream.
Some products can contain hidden sources of sugar so you may not be aware of areas where you are ingesting sugar on a regular basis. These include salad dressings as well as most processed foods (anything in a can, bottle or box). Anything labeled no/non fat is suspect. When fat is removed from food recipes they also lose flavor. One way manufacturers replace lost flavor is to add sugar.
If reducing sugar intake is your goal it may be healthier to eat a smaller portion of the original recipe. The only sure way to know if your food contains hidden sugar is to read labels carefully. Manufacturers have a secret language they use to disguise the fact that sugar is an ingredient. Terms such as fructose, sucrose, dextrose, corn syrup and maltodextron are all forms of sugar.
Foods containing sugar do not require much digestion and quickly pass directly to the blood stream, giving rise to a very rapid increase in blood sugar levels. Apart from the quick yet short-lived energy that sugar gives, it provides us with no significant nutrients. All sugar not used by the body for energy or muscle and liver storage will be stored in the body as fat. It has been recommended that sugars should supply no more than 10% of our energy intake, but actual consumption has been estimated to be far above that amount.
Figuring out the true ingredients of the food you are eating can be a very confusing full time job. High Level Wellness can guide and support you with quick easy tips that clear up food mysteries as well as assist in getting you off the sugar roller coaster while reducing cravings naturally. Sugar Blues
If your mouth waters at the thought of chocolate or you can’t imagine life
without dessert, this class is for you. Sugar is a major addiction. We’ll discuss ways to overcome cravings that do not involve willpower. Class includes an effective 10-step program.
Miracles of Menopause –Perimenopausal symptoms are best described as “PMS times ten”. This phase can last up to thirteen years before actual menopause occurs. In order for the body to continue to produce levels of hormones adequate to support health before and after menopause a woman must be optimally healthy going in-physically, emotionally, spiritually and situationally. Learn what options are available and how to come through this process stronger, happier and healthier than in younger years.
Why Weight? – No more quick fixes and crazy concepts. Simple delicious, whole foods support health and maintain weight naturally. Most diets rely on strict discipline, lists of foods and tiny-portion sizes to reduce calories and lose weight, thereby leaving you feeling hungry and deprived. We have our own ideas on food and diet, let us share them with you.
